SATO™ 10'8"/ 11'10"/ 12'9" (adjustable)
The Sato is the rod we designed to make it easier to choose a tenkara rod, reducing the need to contemplate the question of "what tenkara rod should I get?"
The Tenkara USA Sato™ is a compact and lightweight (2.6oz) adjustable tenkara rod that can be fished at 3 lengths: 10'8", 11'10", and 12'9" (3.25m - 3.9m). At its shorter length it is perfect for tighter streams, and at its full length it will be ideal when the stream opens up again or when you find a bigger pool to cast your fly. The Sato is named after Mr. Ernest Satow, an avid mountaineer who was the first person to make a written record of tenkara.
The Sato™ has two patent pending features:
Triple-zoom: this allows you to use the rod at three different lengths - 10’8”/ 11’10”/12’9” (330/360/390cm). The average length for a tenkara rod is 12ft long, we like to recommend rods that are closer to 13ft, yet many people are intimidated by such long lengths for rods intended for smaller streams. So, we felt a rod with the 3 most common lengths would be an easy choice: short to ease you into tenkara, medium to give you a taste of the advantages presented by a long tenkara rod, and long to help you take full advantage to the tenkara method.
Keep your Plug™ system (patent pending): We're very excited about this very simple yet innovative feature. After hearing that no one has ever been able to keep their tenkara rod plug for longer than a year, we decided we should find a solution for you to never lose your plug again. We designed the “Keep your plug”™ system. Next time you go fishing, remove the plug from the top end of your rod and insert it into the hole at the bottom of your rod. The Sato™ will come with two plugs on the rod; please leave one at home in case you ever need it.

I made the switch to Tenkara for my backpacking trips and purchased the Sato based on a number of recommendations. The rod seems to be a perfect fit for the Sierra. For small streams/creeks of the high country and east side, it is great at the shorter length. For Sierra lakes, the longer reach with the extended length is also useful. It is a beautiful rod and has a great feel in hand. I have only caught small trout so far but I am happy that it can handle larger fish if needed. Looking forward to using the rod in other locations in the years to come. Highly recommended.
I’m fishing tenkara since only couple of years even tho I have 35 plus years of fishing experience. I’m so glad I discovered this beautiful fishing technique and specially glad I discovered Tenkara USA.
I know to recognize great products when it’s about fishing and tenkara USA are the best out there. Daniel and his team makes things with love and passion. They are always present when you have a problem. Always there to help you with kindness and Savoir Faire. It’s almost like a tailored personal service when you buy a product from them. I’m so happy about my choice and never felt so good fishing up in the mountains with just a rod a line and a fly. Just me reconnecting to Nature.
My favorite stream is about four feet wide, second favorite is about 10 times as wide, with one rod I can fish them both. The Sato is light weight but I can easily cast a size 8 stimulator.
I do not leave home with out it. The SATO has provided me an intro to Tenkara that I continue to be thrilled by. This is the right tool for the job whether fusing gets for baby blues at the beac to 12 inch rainbows in the Housatonic and Farmington. Looking forward many more hours with my SATO,
I wanted to get a Tenkara rod for my backpacking trips due to the ease of packing it in my bag. Not only do I want a packable rod, I wanted something that will allow me to handle a larger fish if the situation presents itself. That’s why I picked the Sato. This tenkara was a great choice, allowing me to pick the length depending on the situation. I like to use its full length of 12.9 when I’m in an open area and larger parts of the river. The 10 ft length is great for when I get into tighter streams or areas with a moderate canopy cover. The soft tip on this rod is great for handling the tippet and it also makes the rod extremely responsive to any strikes from small to big fish alike. I definitely recommend this rod for those who are just starting out and learning the ropes of how to use a tenkara.
