The Sato is the rod we designed to make it easier to choose a tenkara rod, reducing the need to contemplate the question of "what tenkara rod should I get?"
The Tenkara USA Sato™ is a compact and lightweight (2.9oz) adjustable tenkara rod that can be fished at 3 lengths: 10'8", 11'10", and 12'9" (3.25m - 3.9m). At its shorter length it is perfect for tighter streams, and at its full length it will be ideal when the stream opens up again or when you find a bigger pool to cast your fly. The Sato is named after Mr. Ernest Satow, an avid mountaineer who was the first person to make a written record of tenkara.
The Sato™ has two patent pending features: Triple-zoom: this allows you to use the rod at three different lengths - 10’8”/ 11’10”/12’9” (330/360/390cm). The average length for a tenkara rod is 12ft long, we like to recommend rods that are closer to 13ft, yet many people are intimidated by such long lengths for rods intended for smaller streams. So, we felt a rod with the 3 most common lengths would be an easy choice: short to ease you into tenkara, medium to give you a taste of the advantages presented by a long tenkara rod, and long to help you take full advantage to the tenkara method.
Keep your Plug™ system (patent pending): We're very excited about this very simple yet innovative feature. After hearing that no one has ever been able to keep their tenkara rod plug for longer than a year, we decided we should find a solution for you to never lose your plug again. We designed the “Keep your plug”™ system. Next time you go fishing, remove the plug from the top end of your rod and insert it into the hole at the bottom of your rod. The Sato™ will come with two plugs on the rod; please leave one at home in case you ever need it.

A nod to our past
The Sato is named after Mr. Ernest Satow, an avid mountaineer who was the first person to make a written record of tenkara.
Triple-zoom
The SATO™ can be fished at three different lengths (330/360/390cm), giving you options for just about any situation you encounter.
The SATO was developed to handle it all—from headwaters to main branches of rivers—without needing to reach for a specialty rod. Since it's introduction in 2013, it has become that "one rod" to anglers around the world.
“Bought my Sato two years ago off this website and absolutely love the rod. It works very well with nice action. The products I bought with the rod are also high quality. I definitely recommend.”

The Sato has a very light, precise feel to it at all lengths, and also looks & feels very high quality.
Within just a few casts (coming from a western setup I last used 20 years ago), I was able to get my flies where I wanted them, even underneath some mangroves. I hooked and landed a 12” rainbow in the first few minutes. The rod flexes very nicely to control the fish. Can’t wait to get back out there again!
