Tenkara rods are primarily used for fly fishing in small mountain streams and rivers. The rods are very versatile and can be used to catch a variety of different fresh water fish.
Tenkara rods are reel-less rods that include a rod, line and fly. The line is connected directly to the tip of the rod.
Tenkara rods are made of carbon fiber making tenkara rods extremely durable and designed to catch large fish.
You can use any fly with a tenkara rod, but for the best results consider using tenkara flies. We offer four fly patterns that are effective in a variety of waters and regions and offer great movement under water.
The size of the rod you need depends on the type of fishing you’d like to do as well as the terrain and size of the area in which you plan to fish. If you plan to fish in small streams with low, overhanging branches, then a shorter tenkara rod is a good option. A longer rod is good if you’re fishing in larger, more open streams and require more reach.
Tenkara has a variety of rods and the best rod depends on what type and size fish you want to catch, the stream size, terrain and the area you’re located in. If you’re unsure which is the best tenkara rod for you, contact us to get advice from our expert tenkara anglers.
You can use different tenkara lines, including the tenkara nylon line or tenkara furled line, with any tenkara rods.
With longer rods, you are able to hold your line and leader off the water and it’s also easier to reach the rod tip over currents so there’s less risk of your fly being dragged off course.
Tenkara rods are ultralight by design and easy to use. The rod design allows your fly to be in the water for longer which means you spend less time false casting and can achieve longer drifts. They’re also a more versatile rod than a traditional fly rod, meaning you can fish in smaller streams and areas you would often not be able to access with other fly rods.

Great equipment, friendly and knowledgeable employees! AAA+
This is the perfect small-stream rod. It’s extremely light and crisp. Everyone I’ve let try mine out immediately got a huge smile on their face and said it just feels “right” for the small and brushy streams they fish. I would give this rod my full recommendation.
I’ve been fly fishing for 20 years but I’m so happy to have found Tenkara! It removes all of the clutter and makes things simple! It’s a zen-like experience!
So exactly when are these TAMO Tenkara Nets going to actually be released?? I keep checking if they've been released for like 6 months with no update! Release it already or announce when you expect to release them.
Tenkara USA has responded quickly and thoroughly on multiple occasions over the years. Great rods, great equipment, great service - this is the A team.
Perfect for backpacking. Also great for kids or anyone who have trouble keeping a tight line on regular fly rod
I have been teaching fly tying for nearly 30 years. The tools are good and the set is an excellent value
Everything is profitable and needed.
The replacement rod tip sections are identical to my Sato rod. It arrived quickly and packaged very well with good protection. Very satisfied.
One complaint: I wanted to order some flies with my order but that increased my shipping cost substantially. It didn't make economical sense so I passed. Can't remember exactly now but I think the shipping cost was about the same or exceeded the cost of a vial of flies.
Very comfortable especially on warmer days. I've worn the shirt as a base layer on cooler days.
This is my first Tenkara rod. The Iwana is the right length and has a good feel and nice flexibility. Nice case for storing rod.
