SATO™ 10'8"/ 11'10"/ 12'9"
The Sato is the rod we designed to make it easier to choose a tenkara rod, reducing the need to contemplate the question of "what tenkara rod should I get?"
The Tenkara USA Sato™ is a compact and lightweight (2.9oz) adjustable tenkara rod that can be fished at 3 lengths: 10'8", 11'10", and 12'9" (3.25m - 3.9m). At its shorter length it is perfect for tighter streams, and at its full length it will be ideal when the stream opens up again or when you find a bigger pool to cast your fly. The Sato is named after Mr. Ernest Satow, an avid mountaineer who was the first person to make a written record of tenkara.
The Sato™ has two patent pending features:
Triple-zoom: this allows you to use the rod at three different lengths - 10’8”/ 11’10”/12’9” (330/360/390cm). The average length for a tenkara rod is 12ft long, we like to recommend rods that are closer to 13ft, yet many people are intimidated by such long lengths for rods intended for smaller streams. So, we felt a rod with the 3 most common lengths would be an easy choice: short to ease you into tenkara, medium to give you a taste of the advantages presented by a long tenkara rod, and long to help you take full advantage to the tenkara method.
Keep your Plug™ system (patent pending): We're very excited about this very simple yet innovative feature. After hearing that no one has ever been able to keep their tenkara rod plug for longer than a year, we decided we should find a solution for you to never lose your plug again. We designed the “Keep your plug”™ system. Next time you go fishing, remove the plug from the top end of your rod and insert it into the hole at the bottom of your rod. The Sato™ will come with two plugs on the rod; please leave one at home in case you ever need it.

I've tried the Sato out on several winter fishing outings in Montana over the past few weeks and it's been a delightful experience. This is my first exposure to tenkara and the Sato has been a great rod to start with. The craftsmanship of the rod is great, and the handling is sublime. It is extremely easy to set up and once I reach a good spot, I'm fishing in about a minute. I also like the attention to detail, including the longer lilian, sturdy case and protective sock, and especially the spare rod plug in the handle (which I have needed already!). The versatility of having 3 different lengths is the big selling point for me; it comes in handy when fishing main versus side channels of bigger rivers and in areas with access to a wide variety of streams. Winter fishing is always a little challenging here but on my first outing with the Sato, I caught some nice rainbow trout and I realized how the sensitivity of the rod really helps you feel when to set the hook without needing a strike indicator. That sold me on tenkara and on this rod. I'm really looking forward to taking the Sato with me on hikes this spring to explore the many mountain streams around here.
Excellent rod. TUSA customer service is absolutely is the best. TJ immediately responded to my email and rectified my issue. I had a new rod in my hands within days. TUSA has taken care of me twice. In both instances they went above and beyond.
Great build quality! I am able to catch small wild trout in Missouri with ease but also some larger 3lb and 4lb trout so long as I use my feet as the drag and move around a lot :) You will not be disappointed with this purchase.
Just used my new Sato this weekend on the Watauga river here in Tennessee. I set up a nymph rig with it at longest length. First cast landed a 20 inch beautiful rainbow. I had never seen anything like it. The rod handles fish of this size very very well!!!!! This rod had no problem casting that rig with a indicator bobber as well. So not just for traditional tenkara this beast can do it all
Could not resist buying the Sato with TUSA's recent sale--to join my Amago and Rhodo arsenal. Now have all the Tenkara lengths/weights covered...on my first outing the other day, fished the Sato at a local creek ... tried all lengths...really loved the 12'9" length--smooth, great control, minimum effort to cast...while the winter fishing is slow these days in local creeks and small rivers, a little more motivated to try my Sato on future trips and local streams in the next few months. Like the other two, the Sato is a beautiful, classy rod in looks and performance...will be "the" rod I will recommend to newbies looking for advice on a "first rod".
