This Short Cast is a historical piece: Daniel Galhardo's invitation to the fifth annual Tenkara Summit, held on September 19, 2015 at the YMCA in Estes Park, Colorado. It is kept here as a snapshot of what the gathering was like. The event has long since taken place, so the dates and registration details below are for the record only.

Daniel describes the Summit as one of the highlights of his year, a chance for tenkara anglers from around the country and the world to meet in person, share what they know and fish together.

In this episode

  • Two guests from Japan: Yoshikazu Fujioka, described as the leading authority on tenkara fly patterns in Japan and the author of the My Best Mountain Streams website, and Go Ishii, who would talk about fishing and trout around Japan.
  • Mr. Fujioka planned to speak on regional tenkara flies and materials and to give tying demonstrations.
  • The day's schedule: presentations and a Q&A panel, then clinics in fly tying, rigging and casting, plus a room of select vendors.
  • Free time for fishing on the property, then an evening fly tying competition where Daniel says they were not looking for pretty flies, and some tenkara magic.
  • The previous year's Summit near Boulder drew about 200 people, and anglers usually fish together on the second day.

0:00Thanks for listening to the Tenkara Cast. This is a short cast where we talk for just a few minutes about your favorite subject, Tenkara. This episode is made possible by your purchase of Tenkara USA rods, lines, and flies. hey everyone i want to invite you to attend the fifth annual tenkara summit happening next week i'm incredibly excited about this event it's going to be taking place on september 19th at the YMCA in Estes Park, Colorado. This is our fifth annual Tenkara Summit. It's always a lot of fun to put these events together and I just absolutely can't wait for the day to come where I get to meet a lot of you in person. And this year I'm particularly excited about a couple of guests that we're bringing in from Japan. We have Mr. Yoshikazu Fujioka. If you have done any research on Tenkara, specifically Tenkara flies, you might have come across his website, My Best Mountain Streams, where he talks a lot about Tenkara flies. Mr. Fujioka is by far the leading authority on Tenkara fly patterns in Japan. He's kind of curated all these different evidence of historical fly patterns, regional patterns from different parts of Japan. He has an incredible fly tire as well.

1:35Mr. Fujioka is going to be talking about tenkara flies in different parts of Japan, the materials that he uses, and he's going to be doing demonstrations on tenkara flies. And the other guest that we have this year, I'm very excited about that, is Mr. Go Ishii. Mr. Go Ishii is a super friendly guy. I got to know him my last couple of visits in Japan. And he's going to be talking about fishing around Japan and fishing in different parts of the country and the trout in Japan and that kind of thing. So the event is going to be taking place on a Saturday, September 19th. That's the main event. It's going to start at 9 o'clock in the morning. But we do ask for those attending that please show up before 9 o'clock so that we can get the event started on time. If you have a chance, if you're listening to this podcast and learning about the Tenkara Summit for the first time, If you get a chance, please register if you can before Monday, before September 14th, so that we can tally up the numbers on Monday and start making the badges and that kind of thing.

2:39But if you don't have a chance or if you're listening to this podcast after, but before September 19th, you're welcome to drop in as well. We will be taking registrations at the site. It just helps us a lot with planning if you get a chance to do it ahead of time. and the place to register is going to be tenkarausa.com forward slash summit. Again, tenkarausa.com forward slash summit and you can learn a little bit more about the event. You can look at the schedule. You can look at the location where the event is going to be taking place and much more information on that website, tenkarausa.com forward slash summit. The Tenkara Summit, it's just by far one of the highlights of my year because it's always a great chance to get together with this community, this really growing community of Tenkara anglers from around the country and around the world, get to learn from one another, share experiences with one another, and finally connect their faces to the names.

3:40A lot of you might have connected with Tenkara anglers from all over the place, online via Facebook and other websites. And this is a great chance to get to know people in person, get to fish with people and that kind of thing. the camaraderie in these events is always a lot of fun. The main mission for the event, of course, is for us to bring you all together and share knowledge with one another. We always bring somebody from Japan to share information and that kind of thing. So this year should be a lot of fun as well. Last year we had it in Boulder, just outside of Estes Park, I guess. And we had about 200 people come. The atmosphere was absolutely beautiful. and a lot of fun. We had a lot of people giving us great feedback about how they liked the event. And this year should be about the same thing, just a lot of fun. The location is right outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. There's fishing right there at the property, at the YMCA.

4:43The event, again, is going to start at 9 o'clock. We're going to have the presentations by Goishi, Mr. Fujioka. We're going to have a Q&A panel session. Then we break down or break up for the clinics. So we do fly tying clinics. We have several people on hand doing fly tying demonstrations. We have people showing how to rig your Tenkara rod, line, flies, and that kind of thing. We're also going to have Tenkara casting demos outside and maybe some Tenkara technique kind of clinics as well. At the same time, there's going to be a vendor room with a few select vendors that we bring in just to kind of for people get to know the companies that are really involved in Tenkara, either making packs or that kind of thing. So that should be a lot of fun as well. It's always a great opportunity to learn more about equipment that goes well with Tenkara. And then we break up for some fishing. People can go out on their own from 4 o'clock until 7.30. and then I'm really excited about this year's evening activities at 7 30 again at the YMCA we're going to be coming back and doing like a fly tying evening competition kind of thing so that should be a lot of fun and we have some really special prizes for the fly tying competition it's not we're not looking for pretty flies it's just going to be a lot of fun though I'm really excited about that to see what's going to happen and we're also going to have magic this year. I'm really excited again. Last year we had Dennis coming in and doing some tenkara magic. So if you want to see how to make flies appear out of nowhere, or maybe he'll show the same kind of trick again. You know, if you want to see how to get a fly to be tied to your tippet with your mouth, you can participate in that and watch him doing his magic. It's absolutely wonderful, a lot of fun.

6:38Again, you're invited. If you get a chance, come on over. Ask this park, September 19th in the morning. And then the next day on September 20th, it's not an organized part of the event, but what always happens at the Tenkara Summit the second day, people are just kind of fishing together. And, you know, we'll have a few locations that we'll suggest, and we'll try to fish with one another. That's always a great opportunity to learn more and to see how other people fish and spend more time on the river with somebody. So come on over. We'll see you at the Tenkara Summit next week.
