IWANA™ 12ft (360cm)
The Iwana is our classic all-around tenkara rod and at a great value. The progressive taper, ultra-light weight, and tip action provides for great battles, even with smaller fish. Quality and strength are by no means compromised, and landing large fish is not unheard of. The original choice of many early tenkara adopters outside of Japan, the Iwana is still a great choice to help you fall in love with tenkara.

I bought my first TenkaraUSA rod when the company was starting out in California. I was looking for a compact fly rod to take on family hikes. During a hike outside of Aspen, the rod saved the day. My son didn۪t want to go any farther. Luckily we found a small stream nearby and took a break. I pulled out the rod and immediately caught a small trout. That was enough to energize my son. He took over and I never was able to fish again that day. A few years later, I bought my second rod. I was not going to sit on the sidelines again.
The rod is a pleasure to use and although I have not fished a great deal with it I have felt happy and 'happy' every time I have taken it out.
Tenkara 's simplicity appealedand I 'adopted it early'. What I didn't 'get' was the importance of technique that makes Tenkara even more fun, despite subscribing to the mystique of Dr. Ishigaki .
I needed help and got Daniel Pearce (@mainetenkaraguide) to give me half a day; we started with the basics. Dan showed me how to read the water, cast accurately and move without slipping over (new footwear and a staff), and suggested ways to continue to improve after he had escaped. It was a great introduction and he must have called on all the reserves of patience that he uses with recalcitrant teenagers when he counsels them.
He emphasized the absolute necessity of collapsing the rod before you move. I managed to do it until packing up for the day when, of course, I snapped the tip just below the lillian!
Dan said, somewhat resignedly, that I should contact you and get a new tip for the cost of postage. I talked to TJ who was very sympathetic, despite, I imagine, having a lot of clumsy old men to contend with. I had the new section within three days.
So, excellent rod, great confidence-boosting guidance and exemplary customer service.
Now, fully armed, I have to get out improve my fishing.
I was turned on to Tenkara rods by a man I met at a local lake while fishing with a traditional rod and reel. I immediately fell in love with the simplicity compact nature of this rod! I keep my Iwana in my bag and it goes with me wherever I go, everyday, because you never know when you will have the chance to fish!
I have been Tenkara fishing for about a year now and can not be without it anymore! From bass in VA, to trout in CO, these rods can handle it all! I cant wait to take more trips and experience the fun of catching more fish, and different kinds of fish with these rods! Do not let the simplicity fool you, these are QUALITY rods and gear, that will more than adequately suit your needs!
I bought my Tenkara about 5 years ago and it has been a mainstay of my camping set up year round. I can also take it with me anyplace I go, in the off chance I get free time and there is a River nearby.
I loved the mobility of Tenkara fishing, and the mobility and ease of use of this rod has never disappointed. For the price, the quality, the experience, you can beat it in my opinion.
I got this rod a couple years ago, and absolutely love it! It is compact, and very lightweight. I was intrigued by this rod because it seemed like a great option for backcountry travel. I backpack a lot and try to keep my pack as lightweight, and minimalist as possible. This rod is a great addition to my go to gear. Not only is it versatile, but it is an absolute beaut! Highly recommend this product to anyone who’s looking for a lightweight fishing rod, that still kicks some tail on the water!
