A complete tenkara set including the shortest and lightest tenkara rod in our lineup with a starter kit containing everything you need to start fly-fishing. The Rhodo can be fished at 8’10", 9’9”, or 10’6”. Rod includes case and woven sock. The kit bag comes with the Tenkara USA Keeper, 11'6" Nylon Tapered Line, 3 tenkara flies, a spool of tippet, forceps and nippers.

Pick this set if you fish in very tight spots. It's a favorite rod for those fishing the tight streams in the Appalachians and other very small canopied streams. Everything you need to tenkara fish, except for a fishing license and water.

Perfect for float tubing and mountain streams

I live in Anchorage, Alaska and purchased the Rhodo for float tubing in the local stocked lakes. While Tenkara advertises for mountain streams, it is perfect for these lakes too. It is much easier to get in and out of the water with the rod all packed up. The lakes are typically stocked with Rainbow trout and I use nymphs or streamers. I also use the Rhodo in mountain streams and lakes near my cabin. Again, it is mostly nymphing and streamers for Rainbows and Dolly Varden. My husband and I just came back from a trip to the Tangle Lakes which are a 7-hour drive from Anchorage. I used the rod in both the river and the lake. It was so nice to be able to avoid the river vegetation when casting. The last fish of the trip was a 16” Grayling with my Rhodo on a fly I tied myself.

Long Term review

I was a reluctant western style fly fisherman. The range of gear was cumbersome, and I frequently found myself excluding fishing from my hikes and trips. Enter the Rhodo. I discovered this rod at Dragon Fly in Crested Butte in 2013 or 2014, and being new to Tenkara, I chose a size that approximated my western style rods (see Rod Sizing information and the TenkaraUSA podcast for why this is maybe not the best approach). This rod is smaller in the range, yet it has been perfect for smaller streams and lakes and even up to medium sized rivers around Colorado. The Rhodo lives in my day pack with 2 lines and a handful of flies At 8'9" it allows me to maneuver in willow choked creeks, and smaller streams, and the reach of 10'6" lets me move more line when I have the elbow room. The action is forgiving and protects the tippet when larger fish hook up, yet it is more than stout enough to easily move longer lines and larger flies. I even occasionally will use this with a Chzech nymph rig in a deep hole on the Blue River next to my house. This may be frowned upon by tenkara traditionalists, but also illustrates the true versatility of the rod. Overall, I can't recommend a better starting point for Rocky Mountain alpine fishing. I have several other tenkara rods including the ITO, but this was my first, and after half a decade, is still my go to rod for daily fishing in the high country.

Perfect East Coast Rod

I grew up fishing remote streams in Appalachia (Western NC, Shenandoah Valley, West Virginia) and would solely dry fly fish because I could get away using a 7'6 rod with thick coverage around streams. I now have a better understanding of how many fish I used to walk by that were in no way ever going to rise up and hit my fly. So I tried nymphing with your standard 5wt 9 ft rod and would have a ton of difficulty getting to the bottom of pools where the fish are. Much frustration later, A friend recommended the Rhodo to me so that way I could have the versatility of fishing with a short rod (when things are tight) or extending it out to 10'6 for when I really needed the extra length to get my fly down. If you aren't snagging on the bottom occasionally, you aren't fishing low enough. Additionally, most of my fishing destinations require some form of hike to get into and the Rhodo packs down to be able to bushwhack through without being afraid of breaking the rod. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the sensitivity of the rod and being able to feel strikes. It is intuitive fishing at its finest!

Very sensitive, top notch quality

I got my Rhodo this past April(2020). This rod is amazing. I fish in small streams and rivers in Western NC. I mainly fish with Nymphs and wet flies. With this Rhodo makes it very easy to do because the main line stays above the water so you naturally got a very small amount of tension on the nymph making it possible to feel every bite without needing to rig up an indicator. Very recently I was wading and slipped in the creek, I fell landing on my Rhodo breaking the handle and the first segment. I called Tenkara USA as soon as I got home. Best customer service. I was helped by John. He got me all my replacement parts sent out by the next business day. I called probably within an hour before the shop closed that day. Since the day I got this rod it’s the only rod I have fished with.
