Light Japanese Lantern (Size 12, 3 Flies)
Description
The Japanese Lantern is a versatile, all-purpose sakasa kebari with a subtle yet distinctive twist. Tied in classic black with silver wire ribbing, this pattern delivers proven visibility and contrast in everything from crystal-clear waters to turbid streams. The silver ribbing adds segmentation and sparkle that enhances the fly’s attractor quality.
Its forward-facing (sakasa) hackle flares in the water, allowing lifelike movement during a wide range of presentations—from upstream dead drifts to active manipulations. While it can be fished passively, the Japanese Lantern truly excels when animated with pulsing, twitching, or lifting techniques.
At the heart of this pattern is its pearlescent head—a unique detail that peeks through the hackle with an insect-like flash. It’s just enough to catch the attention of feeding trout without overdoing it. Unweighted and best suited for fishing near the surface or in shallower riffles and runs, the Japanese Lantern is a must-have for tenkara anglers looking for both finesse and flair in a single fly.

Great fly for brook trout
These new flies are very nice. There seems to be a bit more weight on them so they probably are worked better below the surface.
I love the river hackle. It makes the flies more life like.
This has been a fantastic pattern for small, still water and streams in Central Texas. The ribbing and flash on the head provides just the right amount of light reflection to trigger strikes from panfish and small bass. Very high quality construction!
