Our tenkara blog has been one of the main channels we have used to spread tenkara far and wide. Here you can browse over a decade of content that is still relevant today.
When the opportunity to learn flying fishing popped up for me recently I thought, "that's something I wanted to do later in life, when I have more time". Well, that thought was easily tossed aside. I spent the summer learning the ins & outs of “reel” fly fishing, but then stumbled upon Tenkara a few weeks ago. Now I'm the proud owner of the SATO, and guess what...I've landed a lot more fish in the last few weeks comparatively. In fact, I wish I had learned Tenkara before Reel Fly Fishing because of the emphasis Tenkara puts on controlling the leader & fly. For now, I'm going "old school", only using a furled line, 5x tippet, and the Amano Kebari (my fly box is jealous). The true joy is just being outside trying to find trout wherever I can. And this style of fishing is showing me more places than I had suspected. Super happy with the gear! Oh, and I fell on my new pole and snapped a section. Called customer service, explained that it was my fault, and they still sent me the replacement part free of charge (within a few days) because I was well within the 60 day return policy. Guess who has a customer for life now? Nice work Tenkara USA!
The IWANA is a larger, almost fat rod. I am a small person so I like the smaller rods. When I Tenkara fish with a large person, like a big man, the IWANA is perfect because it is well balanced and flexible, yet not too long for the smaller streams.
These are my favorite forceps and nippers. I have a separate pair for each of my tenkara rods (in a Tenkara USA strap pack), each of my western flyfishing setups, and each spinning rod/lurebox combination.
The replacement tip arrived super quick, just in time for my next trip to my local stream. Very easy to replace and affordable. Thanks!
The kit had every thing I need in a small handy pouch.
Good tube exactly as advertised
I love my Amago for open water and larger fish. It has a great feel for the fight but it’s deceptively tough. I recently broke a Tenkara pole my brother in law loaned me attempting to land a large fish at Coffee Pot Rapids in Idaho. I replaced it with the Amago from Tenkara USA, which I should’ve used in the first place.
Tenkara USA has got to be the best company I have ever come across. My boyfriend and I are into most everything related to the great outdoors, including fishing. He has tried fly fishing and told me, yeah not very good. I have been wanting to try myself. I normally use an open spinner rod, if that is the correct term. Since meeting my boyfriend this past January, he has gotten me more into the outdoors and I recently came across this brand while watching a YouTube video about backpacking gear!! So, I decided to look up Tenkara USA and watch their videos. Very intrigued, I ordered my first pole, flies, and other gear. It was originally going to be an up coming anniversary gift for my boyfriend this coming up January. However, upon watching more videos, I thought, nah, this will be for me.
My order arrived, brokenhearted, missing the pole and flies. I made 2 orders back to back, so I reached out to John and Team Tenkara USA to see if there would be another shipment. Apparently not, yet, they reshipped the pole and flies. UPS, redirected the shipment to an apartment of which I do not live in an apartment. The tracking showed delivered. I once again reached out to John and Team Tenkara USA and they reached out to UPS. They reshipped the missing pole and flies again and finally I received them. Most companies would never do this. They must truly believe in their products.
Upon, receiving the missing pole and flies, I cannot wait to try it out. What a beautiful pole and great caring customer service. This pole is so light weight and collapses down to a manageable size with its own light weight and sturdy carry case. Perfect for backpacking like my boyfriend and I do. So far, very impressed and appreciative of this company and their products. I strongly recommend them for anyone interested in picking up fly-fishing.
I believe, I'll have to order a second one for my boyfriend as he is not getting this one!!!!
Thank you so much John and the entire Team Tenkara USA!!
One very satisfied and will be a repeating customer,
I was very satisfied with the response I received when I called about a rod tip section that seemed to be splintering near the base after using it only a couple times. A new tip section was sent quickly at no charge. It is refreshing to have a company stand behind its products with excellent service and pleasant customer relations. Thank you, Tenkara USA, for your help.
This is my first tenkara rod and definitely not my last. This has opened up so many new fishing opportunities on every water body I fish and the Sato is an amazingly versatile piece of equipment it catches small species like shiners and shad with ease, pan-fish like crappie and bluegill put up a good fight and it can take on larger trout amd the occasional striped bass as well! I've put this rod through its paces and have had a lot of fun. If you're thinking of getting into tenkara this is an amazing way to get started. Unless you only want to fish massive waters for big fish or overly congested areas for tiny fish with no room for a proper bow and arrow cast the size range on this rod is perfect even in tight areas. Be prepared to get some looks and answer some questions while fishing in overly public areas! In my area this concept seems wholly new or as "just cane pole fishing" so people seem to be curious how the reel-less approach works and how it compares to more conventional western approaches. It's a great conversation piece and incredibly effective.
There was a problem with the furled line. The cord was wrapped thru the metal ring making it really difficult to pass the tippet thru. I called and the rep sent me a replacement (thanks ) but I felt you-all should know about this in case other lines have the same problem.
I’ve been fishing my Amago for 10 years now. Always nice to be able to get parts so easily. I keep an extra tip set in the tube for emergencies.
Excellent resource, well written, easy to understand. Placed my first order and looking forward to getting out there.
The Hane is the best "always have with you" rod. If I'm hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, but fishing isn't my focus (if it is you will have lots of gear), this is the rod I have tucked in my pack. It's stout enough to handle any small water fish and collapsed down it is just 15 inches long (28 cm) so I almost forget it's there. With the Hane, a line on a keeper with some flies in that little box, a spool of extra tippet, nippers and hemostats and I'm ready to pull a brookie out of a stream during a lunch break. Keeping it in my pack during a business meeting is good luck too.
Perfect rod for a variety of situations it's all you need to carry
