My friend Masaki's favorite hangout spot is a great sushi restaurant in San Francisco, Aka Tombo is its name. It is right in Japantown. A few months ago I mentioned to Masaki that it would be fun to see a "Tenkara Roll" in the menu of a Japanese restaurant.
Lo and behold, Aka Tombo may now be the first restaurant to offer said item in their menu! It seems like Masaki, the tenkara ambassador, convinced the sushi chef to create the item, especially for when you visit! The tenkara roll is simple; only salmon, salmon roe and cucumber are used. Masaki says, "it's not exactly a roll but it's a traditional 'oshi zushi.' I'm sure you will like it."
Tomorrow night I'll be heading there with Margaret and personally endorse the Tenkara Roll.
If you're in San Francisco, Aka Tombo is located on 1737 Buchanan St., right across the street from the Japantown plaza.
